Enjoy the beauty of the Southern Yorkshire Wolds The North Cliffe Circular takes in some beautiful East Riding countryside along a 12 and a half mile route which partially follows the track of an old canal, goes along tracks and through Houghton Wood. It is mainly flat with some minor road walking. The small, but busy town of Market Weighton is an ideal starting point. The town was the home of William Bradley, the Yorkshire giant, who was 7ft 9ins tall and weighed 27 stones. If starting at Market Weighton, the first part of the walk( see map below) follows a stream and then, from River Head southwards, the bank of the former Market Weighton Canal which was built in 1772. This section, however, was closed in 1900 and has since been filled in. Halfway along the west side of the canal is the Land of Nod, a sleepy hamlet that really does live up to its name. Houghton Wood is said to be one of the largest woodlands in the county and is well known for its rhodedendrons. Remember - stay on public paths through the wood. REFRESHMENTS: There are numerous pubs and shops in Market Weighton.
